The 25ร— Rule (4% Rule)

A widely-used guideline suggests you need 25 times your annual retirement expenses saved to sustain a 30-year retirement (the "4% safe withdrawal rate"). For example, if you plan to spend $3,000/month ($36,000/year), you'd need $900,000 saved.

This calculator uses the 25ร— rule as a benchmark and shows whether your projected savings meet or fall short of this target.

Target = Annual Expenses ร— 25

Future Value = PV ร— (1+r)^t + PMT ร— [(1+r)^t โˆ’ 1] / r

PV = current savings ยท PMT = monthly contribution ยท r = monthly return ยท t = months

Retirement Planning Phases

  • 1.Accumulation (20sโ€“50s): Max out contributions, invest aggressively
  • 2.Pre-retirement (5โ€“10 yrs out): Shift to balanced portfolio, reduce risk
  • 3.Distribution (retirement): Withdraw 4% or less annually
